Why Should You Wear a Sauna Hat During Your Sauna Session?

Editor’s note

During a recent contrast therapy session, a friend asked why we wear those funny cone-shaped felt hats in the sauna. I remember hearing a podcast explain that these hats act as insulators, protecting our heads from the intense heat and helping us stay comfortable for longer. What I found even more interesting is that sauna hats also protect our hair from drying out and becoming damaged.

More often than not, I’ve noticed that most people in the sauna do not wear them. This could be due to a lack of awareness that they exist, uncertainty about their benefits, or simply not wanting to stand out. After learning more about this topic, I’ve gained a greater appreciation for sauna hats. Not just for comfort, but also for hair health.

I hope you enjoy this article and learn something new along the way. Cheers!

Going to a sauna is already a popular way of relaxing and unwinding at the end of the day or after an intense workout. The number of health benefits a sauna session can offer you is ever-growing, and we keep finding out new ways to enjoy our sauna experience.

One of the new developments is wearing a hat in the sauna. While they’re super cute, they’re not there only for fashion, as they provide many health benefits. Keep reading and find out more!

Sauna Hat – Material

First and foremost, we should explain what a sauna hat looks like. It’s different than a winter hat that you might wear outside, and it’s made out of specific material.

The best sauna hat is usually made out of felt or wool, and it has a special cone shape. Such materials provide good temperature insulation and absorb sweat while holding their shape well. You won’t find such properties in a linen or a cotton hat. These kinds of sauna hats can also be easily washed and cared for.

A sauna hat should cover your whole head and surround your ears. It should not be loose on your head, but it should also not be too tight, as that might be very uncomfortable in a sauna.

Sauna Hats Help Maintain Body Temperature

The first reason why you should wear a hat in the sauna is to maintain your body temperature. During a sauna session, the head is particularly vulnerable to overheating. More often than not, you will leave the sauna because your head feels overwhelmed with heat.

A sauna hat acts as a thermal shield and makes sure that your head remains at a comfortable temperature. This is especially important for those who always have longer sessions or want higher heat levels. It’s very similar to how an oven mitt protects your hand when you take food out of the oven! You want that protection for your head too.

Overheating can lead to discomfort and even dizziness, cutting your relaxation time short. By wearing a sauna hat, you provide your head with the necessary protection against excessive heat, allowing you to enjoy the full benefits of your sauna session without interruption.

Sauna Hats Provide Comfort and Protect Hair

Sauna sessions are meant to be relaxing, but excessive heat can cause discomfort for your scalp and hair. A sauna hat offers a layer of insulation, reducing the direct impact of heat on your head. This not only enhances comfort but also protects your hair from potential damage caused by high temperatures.

Regular exposure to intense heat can dry out the scalp, leading to irritation or flakiness. By using a sauna hat, you can maintain a healthier scalp environment, ensuring that your sauna sessions remain a soothing experience.

Sauna Hats Provide Style and Personal Expression

You can buy so many interesting and different sauna hats, and that in itself is a benefit of having one. This allows you to choose a design that fits your taste, and add a touch of style to your sauna routine. If you feel like it, you can also design and make your own sauna hat. Add your personal touch and make it a relaxing hobby. You’ll be reminded of it every time you visit a sauna.

Incorporating a sauna hat into your routine can really make your sauna experience better. From maintaining a stable body temperature to protecting your hair and scalp, the benefits are clear.
